The Homeschool Choice Blog
We already are into the spring standardized testing period for the ACT and SAT. As both parents and students know, this can be a stressful time for everyone, and homeschoolers may face some challenges unique to their non-traditional academic experience.
Virtual schooling in Tennessee, although done at home, is not homeschooling as defined by state law. The new virtual schools approved in the last legislative session must meet state-approved curricular, attendance, testing and other requirements, unlike most homeschooling. As the Tennessee Home Education Association advises, virtual school is a state-sanctioned, public school option.
The response in the homeschool community to Tennessee’s new virtual school option has been mixed so far. While some see the option as an opportunity to get state-approved curricular materials at no cost for students to school at home, the Tennessee Home Education Association offers another view. On its website, the THEA reiterates that virtual school is a public school option in which the state controls the curriculum, attendance, testing and other matters, unlike most homeschooling. Individual virtual schools also may establish additional program requirements.
