Research: Can You Build a Stronger Brain?

The January 10 & 17, 2011 edition of Newsweek has dedicated an insightful article on what we know about brain performance and health. Sharon Begley’s article with Ian Yarett, entitled “Can You Build a Better Brain? Finding what really does increase intelligence,” points to evidence that advances in neuroscience are slowly revealing how our brains work. The most revealing results from recent scientific studies in neuroplasticity found that “taking up a new, cognitively demanding activity - ballroom dancing, a foreign language- is more likely to boost processing speed, strengthen synapses, and expand or create functional networks.”

Other notable findings referenced in this article, with caveat, shown to have some cognitive benefits in various circumstances include:

Molecular Compounds

  • Nicotine and stimulants (Ritalin & Aderall) (refer to the article  for the strong caveats)

Psychological Factors

  • Placebo effect
  • Motivation and reward
  • Thinking about your genetic origin
  • A positive mood
  • Being told or feeling that you belong to a group that does good

Reaching Natural Potential by Removing Impediments

  • Reducing stress

Actively Raising Natural Potential

  • Practice/Cognitive Training (the more you use a circuit, the better it gets, however, research so far suggests that cognitive training benefits only the task used in training and does not generalize to other tasks)

  • More generalizable benefits:
    • Physical Exercise
    • Meditation
    • Strategy-heavy video games (with walks in between levels)
    • Continuous and new learning

Hi guys,
I like the comment about taking a walk "between levels" of video games. I think we should add "become a mall walker" to the list...but that is maybe not research based.

Would you all like for me to summarize the NY Times article on Assistive Technology (AT) for the next one of these? Just say the word, and I will.

Have a good week,
wb
