PRESCHOOL SCREENING

A preschool screening is designed to evaluate a child’s early development of language and pre-academic skills, which are predictors of future academic success.  A screening may also help with the early identification of any potential weaknesses which may affect a child’s later school success.  Research has shown that the rate of learning and development occurs most quickly during the preschool years.  Early intervention can have a positive effect on a child’s academic future.

A preschool screening evaluates the following skills which are related to general information, reading, mathematics, writing, and spoken language.

  • Knowledge of personal data
  • Knowledge of body parts
  • Color and number concepts

  • Time awareness (days/months/seasons)
  • Use of prepositions
  • Knowledge of letters/sounds
  • Rhyming
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Visual perception
  • Ability to copy and trace
